MAYVILLE, N.Y.:--The community is invited to come and celebrate recovery and help end the stigma surrounding drug and alcohol addiction by participating in one of two Recovery Walks to be held in Chautauqua County.
The Recovery Walk in the North County will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 4 p.m. and will begin and end at City Hall, 342 Central Ave. in Dunkirk, N.Y.
The Recovery Walk in the South County will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at noon and will begin and end at the Mental Health Association (MHA), Gateway Center, 31 Water St. in Jamestown, N.Y.
The Recovery Walks are collaborative events being held in conjunction with National Recovery Month in September. The goals of the Recovery Walks are to promote awareness, educate the community, remember those who have lost their fight with addiction, and to support those who are still struggling with addiction.
“These Recovery Walks are not just for those who are suffering from substance use disorder or those who are in recovery, but also for those who are advocates for the movement. Recovery is possible,” said Melanie Witkowski, Executive Director of the Chautauqua Alcohol & Substance Abuse Council (CASAC).
Both Recovery Walks will recognize local community members for their advocacy efforts. Those who will be recognized include Sheridan Smith, Lauri Keller, Krista Camarata, Jessica Falco, Jeff Wentz, and Stewart and Tammy Thomson from Breathe Life of WNY.
The walk events will also include informational tables with local addiction resources and light refreshments will be served at both locations. For those not wishing to walk, or if it is raining, please feel free to join us at the specific location and time listed above.
Recovery Month, now in its 29th year, highlights individuals who have reclaimed their lives and are living happy and healthy lives in long-term recovery. It also honors the prevention, treatment, and recovery service providers who make recovery possible. Recovery Month promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible as well as encourages citizens to take action to help expand and improve the availability of effective prevention, treatment, and recovery services for those in need. With the support and advocacy of the community, we provide hope to those still suffering and honor those who have lost their lives to addiction.
The two Recovery Walks are co-sponsored by CASAC, HOPE Chautauqua, Chautauqua County Department of Mental Hygiene, MHA of Chautauqua County, Evergreen Health Services, City of Dunkirk, United Way of Northern Chautauqua County, United Way of Southern Chautauqua County, and Chautauqua Tapestry.
