MAYVILLE, N.Y.: The Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services is asking all customers of the Village of Brocton water supply to boil all water for drinking and cooking.
Water service to the Village of Brocton water supply including all of Portland except Van Buren Point was shut off this morning to repair a major leak. When service is restored all water customers must boil their water until further notice. Water for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth and making coffee must be brought to a rolling boil for 1 minute then cooled prior to use. Do not drink the water without boiling it first or use bottled water until further notice.
When the distribution pipes and mains lose pressure it increases the chance that untreated water and harmful microbes could enter the system. Boiling the water kills bacteria and other organisms that could be present.
The Village is working to repair the water main break and restore water service. When service is restored the water system will be re-pressurized, flushed and water samples collected. You will be informed when tests confirm that no harmful bacteria are in the system and you no longer need to boil your water. It’s anticipated the boil water order will be lifted by the end of the week.
