Local Waterfront Revitalization Open Houses Scheduled

DUNKIRK, N.Y.:--A Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) is a locally prepared, comprehensive land and water use plan for a community’s natural, public and working waterfront. Chautauqua County has received funding from the New York State Department of State to complete an LWRP for the 10 Chautauqua County waterfront communities along Lake Erie, which include: the City of Dunkirk; Towns of Dunkirk, Hanover, Pomfret, Portland, Sheridan, Ripley, and Westfield; and the Villages of Silver Creek and Westfield.

The LWRP will help Lake Erie waterfront communities plan to preserve natural resources, foster private investment and position themselves to become a premier attraction. In addition, the LWRP will help the communities address critical issues such as flood control and prevention, economic revitalization and tourism, natural resource and habitat protection, public access to the waterfront, recreational trails and agricultural preservation. Adoption of an approved LWRP will position these communities for funding from New York State to implement projects developed during the LWRP process. Since 2009, $1.2 million in grant funds for projects related to a LWRP have been awarded to Chautauqua County communities.

Eight public open houses, over a period of two weeks, have been scheduled for Phase II of the Northern Chautauqua County Local Waterfront Revitalization Program. The open houses will give the public the opportunity to learn about the status of the planning process, see potential projects and to give input on the future of the waterfront in an informal setting.
