Veteran's Peer to Peer Program Holding Kick-Off Picnic

JAMESTOWN, N.Y.: – The Dwyer Peer to Peer Program will be holding a Kick-off Picnic on Sunday, July 16, 2017 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Bergman Park on Baker Street in Jamestown.  Veterans are encouraged to attend with partners and families to learn more about upcoming events and peer to peer activities. The Dwyer Program is open to all veterans and works to establish a personal dialogue in a secure setting between those who have experienced struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The Kick-off Picnic will be a fun, family-friendly afternoon of cornhole, kickball, and music by TPT, a local Jamestown band. Food will be provided and door prizes include two tickets to Peek’n Peak’s aerial adventure course.  T-shirts will be given to all veterans who attend. The community is invited to come to the event to support and meet local veterans and learn about upcoming Dwyer events and activities that are happening in Chautauqua County for both veterans and their partners. Reservations are requested. Please call Cindy Reidy, Dwyer Program coordinator, at 716-661-8447.

The Dwyer project is designed to be a non-clinical, veteran’s support program to pair veterans with other veterans by offering social events and other peer-to-peer activities. Initially established in Suffolk County, the Dwyer Program is assisting the lives of veterans in over 10 counties across New York State. The program connects veterans through a variety of social activities, and part of the program’s approach is developing a team of mentors to work with veterans suffering from PTSD and traumatic brain injury. The Dwyer Program is funded by a grant secured by New York State Senator Cathy Young for the Chautauqua County Department of Veterans Services. The program assists local veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury by providing peer-to-peer support and encouraging dialogue between veterans.

Area veterans interested in taking part in the Dwyer Program can contact Cindy Reidy at 716-661-8447 for more information and to sign up for upcoming events.
