Office of Emergency Services Launches Emergency Medical Services Team

MAYVILLE, N.Y.:-- Chautauqua County Office of Emergency Services Director Julius Leone Jr. recently announced the start of the Chautauqua County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Program in the county.


The EMS program, which operates under the guidance of the Chautauqua County Office of Emergency Services, was a recommendation identified in a 2015-16 EMS study by MMA Consulting Group. The program works in conjunction with ALSTAR EMS and paid and volunteer fire departments across the county to provide paramedic fly car response during daytime emergencies.


“Across the county we have seen a decrease in the number of EMT’s and Paramedics who are available to respond to an emergency during the day,” said Leone. “By implementing a blended EMS Response System we should be able to get a Paramedic to the patient in their time of need. This new Blended EMS response system, our team of professionals will work in conjunction with other service agencies to address this need for daytime EMTs and Paramedics.”


The team consists of four paramedics, who will each have an advanced life support vehicle. Each vehicle will be stationed at a different location to ensure the entire county is effectively covered. A vehicle will be stationed at Arkwright Town Hall in Arkwright, Chautauqua County Office of Emergency Services in Mayville, Ashville Fire Department in Ashville, and Gerry Fire Department in Gerry. The team will provide assistance Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.


Kevin Peebles, Project Coordinator EMS stated, “Over the past several years there has been a decline in available EMTs throughout the County, especially during the daytime hours. The implementation of the fly car program will allow us to better assist the EMS squads in the County to deliver EMS to their communities,” said Peebles. “We are staffing the fly cars at the Paramedic level. By doing this we will be able to deliver the highest level of care available in the prehospital setting. The success of this program will rely on a collaborative effort between Chautauqua County EMS, the County Fire Departments and WCA Services.”


The funding for the program was included in the 2017 budget process and its establishment was approved in 2016 by Chautauqua County Executive Vince Horrigan and the Chautauqua County Legislature.


“By implementing a countywide paramedic fly car response team to work in partnership with our community volunteer fire services, it will ensure our citizens in life threatening distress get the prompt and lifesaving treatment they need,” said Horrigan, Chautauqua County Executive.
