FAQ

Where is the Public Defender's Office located ?

The "main" Office site of the Chautauqua County Public Defender's office is located at the following address:

Public Defender, Chautauqua County, Hall R. Clothier Building, 1st Floor, Room 106, 7 North Erie Street, Mayville, NY  14757

A new additional Public Defender's office will be opening  in the near future  in Jamestown, NY.   The new office has not yet been completed.   Please do not confuse the new office with the Friday open interview site.   The Friday open interviews are still located at 200 East Third Street, Jamestown NY from 9:00 am - 12;00pm.  Should you have any questions please feel free to call the Public Defender main office at (716) 753-4376.

Can you choose your public defender?

It is up to the Public Defender's Office to assign an attorney.   Each court has an assigned Public Defender specified by the office.  It is highly un-likely that the public defender's office will decide to change attorneys internally upon request.  Should a conflict occur in regards to the defendant, the court will assign an outside attorney to represent the client.  This process is carried out upon notification from the Public Defender's Office that a conflict does indeed exist.
